STOCKHOLM: A newborn baby found positive of COVID-19 believed the baby was infected through the mother’s womb.

According to the report of the medical journal in Sweden, Dagens Medicin, the reported case was the first case that the baby was infected through the mother’s womb in the country.

The head of the Paediatrics Surgery and Neonatal Care from Skane University Hospital, Elisabeth Olhager, said that the infected baby is currently receiving treatment in the health facilities located in South Malmo.

During the prenatal checking, she said that the baby’s mother also confirmed with positive for COVID-19. However, the baby does not show any symptoms of COVID-19 such as cough, fever, or fatigue.

Regardless, she said there is no need to change the daily routine of the hospital, although there are such cases that involved a newborn baby.

“As far as I know, there are more baby births recorded in Stockholm and the mother was found infected with COVID-19 elsewhere, but there is no infection on the babies.

“Hence, I think there’s no need to change the hospital’s daily routine with just one particular case,” mentioned by Elisabeth Olhager.

The mentioned case is considered rare in the international context, as there are only a few infected newborn babies cases reported.

According from a study of a published medical journal in July, The Health of Youth and Lancet Children shows that the observation towards 116 pregnant mothers found zero infection of COVID-19 on babies during the pregnancy period. – Berita Harian
