GOF arrests man, seizes about RM1mil worth of fake alcohol

KLUANG: The General Operations Force (GOF) arrested a 39-year-old man and seized more than 9,600 bottles of counterfeit alcohol from a factory in the Wawasan industrial area near Kampung Batu 6 here.

GOF Fifth Battalion commanding officer Supt Dimin Awang said the suspect was in the midst of loading cartons of fake alcohol into a car when his team raided the factory at around 1.50pm Saturday (Sept 5).

“The factory has been operating for the past four months and was used as a processing centre and storage space for the fake alcohol of various brands.

“We believe that the counterfeit items packed here were headed for Johor Baru as well as Malacca,” he said in a press conference Saturday.

Supt Dimin said a total of 321 cartons containing 9,608 bottles of fake alcohol were seized during the raid along with a car, worth about RM1mil in total.

“We also found another 410 litres of fake alcohol in barrels which had not been bottled yet,” he said.

He added that the factory had three other workers who took turns to fill and label the bottles.

“They targeted foreign workers and the items were sold cheaply, between RM20 to RM30 each.

“I want to remind the public to report illegal activities such as this to the authorities immediately, as drinking fake alcohol could result in alcohol poisoning, which has happened before,” he said.

The case is being investigated under the Customs Act and the suspect was handed to the Kluang district police headquarters, said Supt Dimin.–The Star
