KUANTAN: Former Pakatan Harapan secretary Saifuddin Abdullah said today that he has yet to receive a letter of demand from his former party PKR seeking RM10 million compensation.

Saifuddin, who is now communications minister in the Perikatan Nasional government, said he would only decide on his course of action after receiving the letter.

On Wednesday, PKR said letters of demand would be sent to 19 MPs and state assemblymen for leaving the party.

Saifuddin, who is MP for Indera Mahkota, was a former senior Umno member who joined PKR in 2015 in protest over the 1MDB scandal. In March, he was among those who left the party, with former PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin, to ally themselves with PPBM.

Zuraida has said she was prepared for a court battle.

Saifuddin said today: “Once the letter arrives, my lawyer will study it and definitely we will discuss how to handle this issue.”

PKR said the 19 elected representatives would have seven days to pay up, failing which the party would begin legal proceedings to claim for the compensation.

On another matter, Saifuddin expressed regret over a Pahang DAP state assemblyman’s action in challenging the Pahang government’s ruling on the compulsory use of Jawi on signboards.

He said it was inappropriate for the assemblyman to resort to court action although he has the right to do so.

Saifuddin said they should understand the position of Jawi in the country and the move to popularise its use, including in public places.

Tras state assemblyman Chow Yu Hui was reported to have filed an application for a judicial review of the state government’s ruling requiring that Jawi script also be used as an additional element on signboards. The ruling took effect Jan 1 this year.–freemalaysiatoday
